The department of Cardiology was amongst the first departments established at SGPGIMS, Lucknow, in late 1987. In October 1987, the first patients started to trickle into the OPD while indoor admission facilities got underway in mid 1988 in the general hospital. With the procurement of Treadmill Stress Testing and Colour Doppler Echocardiography facilities, the non-invasive laboratories were set up in the same year and with the ICU monitoring system being installed a sophisticated cardiac intensive care unit started functioning. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (a Biplane System) became operational in 1989. Professor PS Bidwai joined in September 1989 as Professor and Head of cardiology, and the first DM Cardiology student was admitted in Jan 1990. The department started many procedures – both invasive and non invasive, under his leadership and guidance, prime among them being coronary interventions which started in 1991. Following his retirement in 1991, Dr Savitri Shrivastava’s arrival imparted a new impetus to various aspects of the cardiology services, especially in the fields of Paediatric and Interventional Cardiology. She was instrumental in starting mitral valve balloon dilatations and paediatric therapeutic interventions. The leadership qualities and progressive outlook of these stalwarts enabled the department to progress rapidly and become self-sustaining, so that even after their departure from the Institute, we can look back on our achievements with pride and satisfaction.
