We knew that something wasn’t right when my 14 months old daughter Aadhya was nearing day 6 of fever and illness. “She started to show other debilitating signs that were getting worrisome,” So we decided to take her to paediatrician Dr. Pranjali Deshpande at Columbia Asia Pune for a check-up. But within moments of assessing Aadhya, Dr. Pranjali suspected something much more serious than a fever: Kawasaki disease. It is a rare illness that usually affects children under the age of 5. It can cause inflammation or swelling of the blood vessels of the heart. Doctor advised us to get 2D Echo done to check whether the disease caused any damage to her little heart. Fortunately the reports were good so the doctor advised us to admit Aadhya immediately for further treatment. We were told Aadhya’s treatment would involve an IV-infusion of proteins (called Immunoglobulin), and that it would be a 15-hour long process. We were so scared and in shock. It was a nightmare for our family, but Dr. Pranjali handled it with such a grace. The next day, after completing the IV-infusion for 15 hours, Aadhya’s temperature started to decrease and she started feeling better. Dr. Pranjali has advised us to stay in hospital for next 48 hours to make sure that the fever didn’t recur. Technicians were coming into the room to run blood tests and to check the fever periodically. On day 3, Aadhya’s fever came down and her temperature was stable at normal. She started feeling better. Dr. Pranjali has checked Aadhya and prescribed course of medicines for next 6 weeks. She also advised us to consult Rheumatologist for further medical advice. We are very grateful to Dr. Pranjali Deshpande for her timely diagnosis and treatment which helped our daughter to recover from a serious illness.
