Overview
Diabetes is a disease in which a person has high sugar level in the blood. This is because the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells do not respond to the insulin produced. The person having diabetes is not allowed to intake sugar in any form.
There are three main types diabetes:
1. Type 1 In Type 1 the body fails to produce enough insulin that is required.
2. Type 2 In type 2 the cells in the body fail to respond to the insulin produced.
3. Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes is when pregnant woman who has never had diabetes before, have high glucose level in the blood..
Symptoms of Diabetes - Diabetes can cause several symptoms, including:
• Vision changes
• Excess thirst
• Fatigue
• Frequent urination
• Increased hunger
• Unusual weight loss
• Weight gain
• Itchy skin
• Irritability.
Causes
The causes of the diabetes depend on the type of the diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is partly inherited and then triggered by certain infections whereas
Type 2 diabetes is due primarily to lifestyle factors and genetics. A hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar is called insulin. Diabetes can be caused by very little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both..
Risk Factors
There are two types of diabetes and the risk factors for each of them are different
Type 1
• Infection or illness
• Genetics and family history
• Diseases of the pancreas Type 2
• Obesity or being overweight
• Impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose.
• Insulin resistance
• High blood pressure
• History of gestational diabetes
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Being inactive
• Its chances increases with age.
Diagnosis for Diabetes
If you experience symptoms of severe increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, tingling of your hands or feet you should run a test for diabetes.An analysis of the urine may be used to look for high blood sugar. A urine test alone does not diagnose diabetes.
The doctor may suspect that you have diabetes if your blood sugar level is higher than 200 mg/dL.. Diabetes cannot be prevented as the root cause is not determined properly. Though there are some preventive measures which can reduce the risk of the disease:
• Regulate your consumption of sugar
• Stop smoking
• Check your glucose level on regular basis
• Prevent developing cardiovascular disease.
