It is recognised as a transplant centre by the Tamil Nadu Government. It is the first stand-alone kidney disease hospital in the country, and a pioneer in renal and urology services. It has also been one of the few hospitals to have an extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) facility in the region.Founded in 1991 as a 25-bedded hospital, it had a dedicated dialysis section, intensive care unit (ICU), three operation theatres, post-transplant wards, general wards, special wards and a large diagnostic laboratory. To this day, the diagnostic laboratory provides transplant immunology and transplant histopathology services to the hospital.
