FSH Hormone in Male

FSH, or follicle-stimulating hormone, is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It plays a crucial role in male fertility by stimulating sperm production in the testes.

Functions of FSH in males:

1. Stimulates sperm production: FSH acts on the Sertoli cells in the testes, which are responsible for nurturing developing sperm cells. By binding to specific receptors on these cells, FSH triggers a cascade of signals that ultimately lead to the production of mature sperm.
2. Maintains sperm quality: FSH also helps to maintain the quality of sperm by promoting the production of a protein called ABP (androgen-binding protein). ABP binds to testosterone, a hormone produced by the Leydig cells in the testes, and transports it to the developing sperm cells. Testosterone is essential for sperm maturation and motility.
3. Regulates testicular growth: During puberty, FSH plays a role in stimulating the growth and development of the testes.

Normal FSH levels in males:

1. Before puberty: 0 to 5.0 mIU/mL
2. During puberty: 0.3 to 10.0 mIU/mL
3. Adult: 1.5 to 12.4 mIU/mL

Conditions associated with abnormal FSH levels in males:

1. High FSH: High FSH levels may indicate primary testicular failure, a condition in which the testes are not producing enough sperm. It can also be caused by damage to the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls the pituitary gland.
2. Low FSH: Low FSH levels can be caused by a number of factors, including pituitary gland disorders, malnutrition, and certain medications.
